Wireless network and use of laptops
Computers
There are five PCs for use in the Library. These provide access to Cambridge University library catalogues, to the Internet, and to electronic journals and databases made available by the University to you. The computers operate during normal opening hours only.
Please remember that these are mostly intended for use for scientific research purposes only (e.g. no emailing, word processing etc. EXCEPT for on the two machines on the right-hand side of the Library as you walk towards the main domed reading area).
You will need to login using your username (your University of Cambridge ID) and your password (this will have been emailed to your @cam email address on 7th November 2011). If you have any problems please contact a member of library staff or the CSCS (Clinical School Computing Service) staff, who are based in an office in the Computer Suite on the 2nd floor of the Department. Their Helpdesk contact is helpdesk@medschl.cam.ac.uk, tel. (01223) (3)36261.
Wireless network and use of laptops
There are several sockets for laptops in the Library. Unless your laptop is relatively new, please make sure that your laptop has been PAT tested for electrical safety before using it in the Library. Ask the Librarian for more details.
The deployment of Lapwing access points in the Department is now completed and the service fully operational.
As well as the Library, the public / general use areas covered are the first floor and basement Seminar Rooms, Part II Lecture Theatre, Main Lecture Theatre, IT Facilities Room, Tea Room, the Elementary Laboratory, Museum basement general use and demonstration room areas. Many of the Access Points in these locations radiate over a much wider area than just that listed so many adjoining areas will be covered but will depend on building structure, use of rooms etc.
How to access the Lapwing Service:
For University Staff and Students access is via Raven password logon. If you have a hermes, mole.bio etc account but do not know or have never used your Raven password go to https://jackdaw.cam.ac.uk/get-raven-password/ (there is also a link at this url to apply for a Raven password if you do not have one).
Access may be possible for short term visitors (typically for users here for less than a month). Please contact a member of the Department of Zoology Computing Services team for more information.
Instructions for access:
Your laptop will most likely automatically discover the wireless network which broadcasts its name as 'Lapwing' and is unencrypted. You can accept the connection when prompted, or if it doesn't appear automatically you should find it and connect via the 'wireless networks' icon on the taskbar (this will vary depending on your type of computer and operating system).
If you are in a signal reception area Lapwing should appear on the list of visible wireless networks. On a Mac you can see this list by pulling down the Airport menu (usually top right of the screen). On a wireless-capable Windows XP system, you should normally be able to see the list of visible networks by right-clicking on the wireless status icon near the right-hand end of the taskbar.
After your basic wireless connection is established, you should open your browser. The Lapwing logon page will appear in place of any web page you attempt to access, until you enter your Raven details. The logon process will create a new browser window (or tab), which is required to allow your network access to continue. This browser window contains some informative text explaining why it should be left open, and also a 'logoff' button to use when you wish to disconnect.

Printing
Colour and black & white printing can be done in the library (during opening hours only, and not on Saturday mornings) and in the Computer Suite on the 2nd floor (24 hours a day, valid cardholders only). The Library printer is located in the Library Office.
The Department uses the University Computing Service’s DS Print service. You can pre-pay for printing online using a debit or credit card, or in cash at Computing Service Reception (also located on the New Museums Site). The charges for printing are:
- Black & white A4: 5p per sheet (whether double- or single-sided);
- Colour A4: 30p per side (i.e. 60p for an A4 sheet printed on both sides.
For more information please see the relevant Computing Service website at http://www.cam.ac.uk/cs/desktop-services/ds-print/payment.html.
You must observe the copyright regulations for printing, which are the same as for photocopying (see below).
Postgraduate students in the Department of Zoology have their own system for printing, please ask Library or Computing staff for more information.
Photocopying
Two photocopiers are available in the Library for copying from books and periodicals, which run during normal Library opening hours.
Please observe the copyright regulations, which are displayed by the machines.
Photocopying charge cards, which operate like phone cards, cost from £5 each (5p per A4 side) and can be purchased at the Library Office. Alternatively, you can borrow a photocopying card from the Library Office and pay for the copies that you make (5p per A4 side).
Cards can be recharged by Library staff in £1 denominations.
Refunds are not available for units not used.
Please remember that cards CANNOT be recharged on Saturday mornings. Please make sure you have enough credit on your card for use on Saturday mornings.
The photocopiers in the Library and Computer Suite can be used to scan documents (in colour) and save them to a memory stick, and vice-versa, for free. Please ask Library staff for assistance.
Scanning
An A3 size scanner is available in the area of the library where the photocopiers are located, on a desk in the study area next to the windows.
This machine is intended for use by all library readers, especially out of hours when the photocopiers are not available, to scan journals etc.
Please obey the copyright regulations which have been provided next to the equipment.
Please switch on the equipment when you want to use it and ensure that you have switched it off after use. Basic instructions on how to do this, and how to scan items, are provided next to the machine.
The PC has been dedicated to the use of the scanner only so you will not be able to use it to access the Internet or the university network.
Therefore you will not be able to send files to a printer and you should save files to a suitable portable storage device for printing elsewhere.
You can save files to the temporary directory on the PC but please be aware that files stored there will be deleted regularly to prevent file space being used up.
Microsoft Office applications have not been installed either.
Scanning software installed:
- Use the scanner’s own software package, EPSON Scan, if you want to create a simple image of your item in JPEG, TIFF or PDF format for example.
- Use Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 to create a PDF of your image and to edit any PDF files you have created.
- Use the graphics packages Corel PHOTO-PAINT X3 or Corel DRAW which will allow you to manipulate your image in a much more sophisticated way.
- See the guides provided next to the equipment for basic scanning instructions using these software packages. A print out of the EPSON Scan manual is also provided.
'Help' files can be accessed from within each software package.
The photocopiers in the Library and Computer Suite can be used to scan documents (in colour) and save them to a memory stick, and vice-versa, for free. Please ask Library staff for assistance.
