Postgraduate Training

Fees
The University and the Colleges both charge annual fees. The University fees, (known as composition fees) in 2010/11 were £3,490 a year for UK and EU students, and £14,073 a year for overseas students. Such fees are likely to rise annually with inflation. If you are a UK or EU student and are awarded a Research Council studentship, these fees are paid automatically. The college fee is the same for both UK/EU and overseas students, and varies between colleges, but the average this year is £2,250 per annum.
An overseas student is generally defined as someone who has not ordinarily been resident in the UK for a three year period preceding the commencement of his or her course and is not a national of a member state of the European Union, or the son, daughter or ward of such a national. This is, however, not an exhaustive definition and further enquiries about eligibility should be addressed to the Board of Graduate Studies.
The University also requires students to prove they have sufficient funds to adequately cover their living expenses for the duration of their period of study.
Each year the Department expects to be able to offer a small number of studentships for PhD candidates, funded by the British Research Councils and by charitable foundations. The Department is unable to fund students from its own resources.
