Social events
All social events in the Department are advertised by email and posters, so keep an eye out for these. Except for the weekly events, all others will also be advertised on the website, so keep checking it regularly.
Weekly events
Happy Hour takes place every Friday in the Tea Room, from 5:30-20:00 (or from 6:00, when Beer Talks are on), and it’s the best way to start your weekend and relax after a hard week’s work.
It is run by volunteers, on a weekly rota. If you’d like to be added to this rota please contact Holly Barclay (hb271@cam.ac.uk).
The Beer Talks are a seminar series run by and for graduate students. Second year students present their work to a friendly audience, composed of students and post-docs. While listening to the talk, you can enjoy cheap beer and free pizza (which always finishes very quickly!). Usually takes place for 4-5 weeks each term.
The organisers for 2009/10 are Ricard Merril (rmm60@cam.ac.uk) and Vera Warmuth (vmw23@hermes.cam.ac.uk).
If you’d like to volunteer to run next year's Beer Talks, please email your grad reps Stephen Montgomery (shm37@cam.ac.uk) or Marta Costa (mmc46@cam.ac.uk).
Annual events
The Department organises a Christmas Party every year, which is always very popular.
There is also the famous Madingley barbecue that takes place in June (health and safety and construction work permitting). This year because it was cancelled, a barbecue for graduate students was organised in the New Museum’s Site for the first time. The event proved popular, so hopefully we’ll be able to enjoy one barbecue a year, either at Madingley or in the main site.
Grad only events
The graduate students organise a biannual one-day Symposium, where students can give a talk or present a poster, and in this way practice their presentation skills. There is also an invited speaker and a prize for best talk and poster. It takes place in a College, with a trip to the pub/dinner scheduled at the end of the day. The next one will be in February 2010.
During the year, dinners are organised once in a while to try and get everyone to know each other. There is a Curry Club - Vindazoo- that meets once a month. Post-docs and significant others are very welcome to join it.
We will also be setting up a pub quiz night in the near future.
If you have any suggestions for socials, please email Nick Crumpton (njc71@cam.ac.uk), Kelly Richards (krr23@cam.ac.uk) or Eva Baermann (evb24@cam.ac.uk).
