Interests and research
My interests are focussed on studying cell movements in the embryos of insects. In non-long germ insects, the embryo arises from a more or less uniform blastoderm via the condensation of cells at a stereotypical position of the egg. I am fascinated by this movement of cells. To study this process I have been carrying out time-lapse confocal microscopy (4D microscopy) on the embryos of transgenic Tribolium castaneum. At the same time, I am mapping the expression patterns of known genes to the developing egg to better understand how changes in expression patterns correlate with the movement of cells/energids. My long term goal is to discover the genes controlling condensation and embryo formation. I am collaborating with several people to study cellularisation/blastoderm formation and to analyse embryo formation when different genes have been knocked down by RNAi.
