Oskar did his PhD at Lund University in Sweden studying the migration ecology of Red Admirals (Vanessa atalanta). During this work he participated in a exchange course travelling to Nigeria and realised that African butterflies were more than just interesting, they were addictive! While finishng up the PhD he started going to Nigeria on regular research visits, doing both pilot studies for potential future projects and helping various NGO:s with bio-monitoring in the rainforest areas of Cross River in South Eastern Nigeria. At a seminar back in Sweden he met Paul Brakefield and to sum it up shortly Oskar left Sweden and worked as a post-doc in Pauls lab for the next two years funded by the Swedish Wenner-Gren Foundation. When Paul moved to Cambridge the initial Post-doc was extended for another four years at Cambridge starting in January 2011 funded by the European Research Council.
His main research focus is the evolution of sex-pheromones and genital structures, and their role in speciation processes. Beside that he is also interested in the early shifts in food-plant among Bicyclus butterflies.
When Oskar is absent from the office he is usally found in the tropics hunting for butterflies, or found under classic cars swearing at rusty old bolts and failed MOT:s.
