I am interested in the genetic basis of adaption in natural populations and its role in speciation, mostly studying mimetic tropical butterflies, but also insecticide resistance in lepidopteran agricultural pests. More recently I have been using genomic techniques to answer these questions. Specific projects include the following:
- Population genomic studies of regions controlling colour pattern, and of the divergence associated with speciation
- Functional studies of the genes that control polymorphism in Heliconius colour pattern genes
- Identification of genes involved in insecticide resistance in the moth Plutella xylostella
- Annotation and curation of the Heliconius genome sequence
- Divergence in mating behaviour and especially the role of colour pattern and pheromonal cues in mate preferences
