My doctoral research out of Oxford was on grey squirrels but I soon afterwards left for Malaysia and Indonesia where over succeeding years I conducted research on tarsiers, monkeys and apes. I worked for local and international NGOs and wrote books on Indonesian wildlife. While working for WWF Indonesia I was seconded to the Conservation Agency as an Advisor and also steered the country's first National Biodiversity Action Plan. I later became employed by Dalhouse University, Halifax, Nova Scotia, to write an exhaustive book on the ecology of Borneo based in the Indonesian province of South Kalimantan. Since 1995 I have worked for the World Bank's Environment Department with a global remit. On behalf of the World Bank I review projects proposed to the Global Environment Facility (GEF) for funding. I also supervise World Bank projects, many funded by the GEF, which are under execution.
Research Interests
My research interests focus on the means by which conservation and development can work effectively and synergistically. By having knowledge of management effectiveness around the world I am able to identify the key factors in conservation success. I am also engaged with the WWF-World Bank Forest Alliance and its Protected Areas Management Effectiveness Tracking Tool which is generating a great deal of revealing and instructive data and intend to use the database to answer key conservation questions.
