Research Interests
My research focuses on explaining and predicting the spatial/temporal dynamics of populations and communities, a key objective in the field of ecology and conservation biology. While populations and communities are regulated by different ecological processes at different spatio-temporal scales, the quantity and quality of information that is available to us also differ among scales. This means we need a comprehensive approach that covers multiple scales to understand ecological dynamics efficiently. For my study, I use both mechanistic and statistical models based on three different approaches; behavioural ecology, landscape ecology and macroecology.
Understanding the determining processes behind the spatial/temporal dynamics of populations and communities can help us predict organisms' responses to environmental changes and identify how conservation/management efforts should be prioritised. Thus, another area I focus on is applying the knowledge obtained from studies above to real life biodiversity conservation problems. In particular, I am interested in the conservation of biodiversity in farmland as well as biodiversity monitoring using large-scale long-term data.
My current project focuses on global species extinction risks of waterbird species, with the aim of developing predictive models of extinction risk and testing the interregional applicability of the developed models globally. This work is a collaboration with Prof. William Sutherland, Prof. Tamás Székely (University of Bath) and Wetlands International and is supported by the JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowships for Research Abroad.
