I joined the group in 2007, immediately following my graduation from the University of St Andrews. Initially, I worked on a project looking at visitor numbers to protected areas (http://www.plos.org/press/plbi-07-06-Balmford.pdf), before beginning work on the Valuing the Arc project. This work on ecosystem services led to my decision to undertake a PhD on how to integrate costs and processes into conservation planning in the Eastern Arc Mountains of Tanzania . Working on the cusp of biological sciences, social sciences and policy is challenging, but I believe this is where the most effective and equitable conservation action can be fostered.

Research Interests

Faced with rapid destruction of biodiversity and inadequate budgets with which to stem its loss, conservationists must set clear priorities for action. My work focuses on how to collect and integrate information on conservation costs and biological processes into conservation planning. Inclusion of costs into conservation planning aids efficiency, equitability and effectiveness of conservation actions, while integration of biological processes will help to ensure species persistence into the future.

Within the broader focus of my PhD, I am particularly interested in:

  • Finding ways to effectively target specific biological processes in conservation planning
  • Developing mechanisms for data-sparse areas that recognize and reduce the various negative impacts that conservation costs have on different groups of people
  • Spatially explicit modeling of the costs of conservation

My work is supported by a Miriam Rothschild Studentship and I am supervised by Prof. Andrew Balmford and Prof. Kerry Turner (University of East Anglia)
