I
welcome applications
to join
my group from potential post-docs at any time,
but cannot provide funds so post-docs
visiting the group will need to make their own plans to fund their time
in Cambridge. Post-doc applicants might consider applying for college
research fellowships, which are advertised in the Cambridge Reporter each
summer. The Department charges
visiting post-docs an annual bench fee of £1200 to cover the
use of Departmental facilities. Post-docs are expected to also be
prepared to make a (small) contribution to undergraduate teaching. Accommodation in Cambridge can be
arranged
through the Society for Visiting Scholars, 12 Mill Lane, Cambridge CB2
1RX (tel: 01223 358072/fax: 01223 360051).
PHD STUDENTS ............................................................................................................................................ Prospective PhD students should apply between 1 December and 15 January. I usually enter two candidates in the Department competition for studentships open to members of all EU countries, having discussed their prospective projects with them first. I seek to finalise who I am entering for the competition by 20 February. Interviews are in mid-March and places are provisionally offered soon after. I am also glad to consider applications for PhD places from qualified students from non-EU countries, but students will not be accepted unless they can guarantee their own funding for the duration of their period as a student. I am afraid I cannot assist with this. Prospective students should initially write, enclosing a CV, telling me where their research interests lie. I may follow this up by asking them to produce a two-page outline of a project that they would like to do for I prefer to take on students that arrange their own independent projects. I may then ask them to come into Cambridge for an initial interview since I'm seldom prepared to support applications unless I've met the people involved. Details of graduate entry and a copy of the Departmental post-graduate prospectus can be obtained from Linda Wheatley, Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, Downing Street, Cambridge CB2 3EJ (tel: 01223 336647; e-mail: l.wheatley@zoo.cam.ac.uk; fax: 01223 336676). Anyone applying to come here should realise that the group has no formal secretarial support. Consequently, we cannot help with raising funds, finding accommodation and making travel arrangements. Please send me hard copies of CV's or other material rather than sending them as attached e-mail files. We take on 8 – 10 volunteer
assistants
per year to work at the Kalahari Meerkat Project. There is usually
strong
competition for these places and most (but not all) volunteer
assistants are
recent graduates in one of the biological sciences. Information on the
project and on how
to apply
can be found on the Meerkat
Project website. VISITORS We are always glad to welcome academic visitors to the group for periods of up to a year, but cannot provide funding to cover their visits.
