I am a behavioural ecologist interested in the evolution of mammalian social and mating systems. At the interface between sexual and kin selection, a major axis of my work investigates the genetic causes and consequences of reproductive strategies in mammalian societies, and from a female’s perspective. More specifically, my research combines behaviour with genetic data to examine the evolution of female sexual signals and competition, polyandry and MHC-related mate choice. My primary study systems have been natural populations of baboons found at the edge of the Namib Desert, and mouse lemurs from western Madagascar. My present work investigates the development of competitive abilities in relation to maternal reproductive strategies in the Kalahari meerkats.
