I have a broad interest in understanding how different types of population dynamic and structure, combined with the effects of selection, mutation and recombination, shape the patterns of genetic variation observed in animal and human populations. My present reshearch is focused on modeling how the early history of anatomically modern human migration and settlement has shaped present-day genetic variation. Using spatially explicit models of movement of individuals between populations, in combination with realistic models of microsatellite evolution, we attempt to reconstruct the tempo and mode of human expansion out of Africa by fitting the model to the large databases of global genetic variation that has become available over the last decade. In our present model the world is partitioned into hexagonal cells of approximately equal size, each containing a population (see figure below for an illustration). Population growth, migration between connected populations, and genetics are modelled using a graph representation of each cell. The historic population growth and migration are determined by local climate and topography, which have been reconstructed using global models of past climate.

Illustration of the spatially explicit model. Black dots show the locations of the cells.
