Department of Zoology

Printed theses held in the Zoology Library

A collection of over 600 PhD and MPhil theses written by members of the Department of Zoology are kept in the Library Office. These are for reference only and are catalogued online on iDiscover.

The collection is by no means complete and no PhD theses have been added after 2019 as these are freely available online via Apollo, the University's respository. If you cannot find the thesis you want, please ask the Senior Library Assistant for help in locating a copy or see 'Print theses held in Cambridge' below.

Due to copyright restrictions, we cannot provide print or electronic copies of all or part of any of the theses held in the Zoology Library. You must obtain this material from the University Library, see their 'Theses' page for more information.

Printed theses held in Cambridge

Copies of all postgraduate PhD theses written by students at the University of Cambridge must be deposited in Cambridge University Library. Catalogue records of theses approved from 1970 onwards can be found on iDiscover. For pre-1970 theses there is a card catalogue in the Manuscripts Reading Room and these are gradually being added to iDiscover. See the Manuscripts Department's web page on Theses for further information.

Electronic Cambridge theses

A small but growing proportion of PhD theses are available to consult in digital form in Apollo, the University repository. This has been a requirement for degrees approved since October 2017 but some have also been uploaded retrospectively. If you search for the thesis via the iDiscover catalogue, you will also get a link to the electronic version if there is one available.

Further information about the scheme is available at:

UK theses, electronic and in print

You may need to consult a thesis published by another university in the UK. For information on how to access these via the University Library, see their web page on Inter-Library Loans at The Zoology Library does not make inter-library loan requests for theses.

The British Library also has an Electronic Theses Online Service (EThOS)

International theses, electronic and in print

Try some of the 'Useful links' on the right hand side of this page to locate national and international theses, either in digital or print format. The link to the 'Theses and Dissertations LibGuide' details how you can access theses held in Cambridge, the UK and international institutions. The Zoology Library does not make inter-library loan requests for theses.

Many universities around the world now require their Ph.D. or Masters students to provide their theses in electronic format, so they can subsequently be downloaded by everyone for free. Try finding the website for the university that published the thesis that you are interested in and then search for "theses" or "Electronic Theses and Dissertations" or "ETDs" - or try a Google search using the same search terms and the name of the university.
