Zoology alumni newsletter
Dear Friend,

This term we celebrate a landmark event: the appointment of the first Claire Barnes Lecturer in Marine Biology, Dr James Herbert-Read, who starts work in October 2019. This role is the first fully-endowed Lectureship supported by our alumni and fundraising programme.

We would like to invite you to our FOURTH annual Zoology Alumni and Friends Open Day on Saturday, 7 September 2019. There is a full day of exciting events, including tours of labs and of the new galleries in the Museum of Zoology, and a talk from Professor Nick Davies (Part II 1972–73) on 'Curious Naturalists: Watching and Wondering'. Another highlight will be 'Fantastic Beasts and How to Film Them' by wildlife filmmaker Tom Mustill (Part II 2004–05), featuring excerpts from his recent film work. It promises to be an unforgettable day.

All events are free-of-charge – to attend, please book on our website, which also contains the full programme of events.

We would also like to invite you to a party to celebrate the 25th anniversary of Happy Hour on Friday 27 September. This will start at 5.30pm in the Whale Hall at the Museum of Zoology. This event is also free, but we need to know if you would like to come so that we can procure a birthday cake of suitable proportions!

We look forward to seeing lots of you at either or both of these events.

Yours,
William

Poster celebrating 25 years of Zoology's Happy Hour

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the phenomenon that is the Zoology Happy Hour. Happy Hour was founded in 1994 by two PhD students, David Aldridge and Duncan Painter, joined the following year by Mick Frogley. This beer-drinking trio developed and ran Happy Hour every week for two years, with the aim of bringing together the entire Department for a regular social get-together.

In those golden days there were no mobile phones and there was no email. Having a regular event in the diary ensured that everyone could assemble in the Tea Room in the knowledge that their friends and colleagues would also be there to wind down and see in the start of the weekend. As well as the weekly drinks, activities included barbecues on the Museum's lawn, discos (with the resident cockroaches of the old Tea Room) and even a brewery tour.

Since then, Happy Hour has gone through a number of incarnations but continues to serve as an important and hugely popular focal point for the Department. The remarkable longevity of Happy Hour is testimony to the enduring popularity of a very simple concept, and reflects the character of the members of our great Department – friendly and always ready for a party!

Happy Birthday Happy Hour and here’s to the next 25 years!

We very much hope you will be able to join the Birthday Party in the new Whale Hall of the Museum of Zoology on Friday 27 September at 5.30pm.
