Department of Zoology

I hold a Bachelor's degree in Agronomy from the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (2013-2017). In the same institution, I obtained my MSc (2017-2018) and PhD (2018-2022) in the research area of Soil Science under the supervision of Professors Marcos Gervasio Pereira and Lúcia Anjos. In my MSc and PhD, I studied soil genesis and classification and mechanisms of soil organic and inorganic carbon accumulation in sedimentary environments, especially in limestone formations.

During my PhD, I was an Adjunct Professor and I taught the subjects IA302 - Soil Physics and IA324 - Land Use Capability and Soil Management for undergraduate courses.

Research

In my postdoctoral project, I am investigating the effects of land use change and sugarcane management practices on soil C, soil health, and associated ecosystem services. During my time at the University of Cambridge, I will research the environmental impacts of sugarcane cultivation in Brazil. I will use a large body of existing data to quantify how negative externalities such as CO2 and N2O emissions vary with yields under contrasting soil and climatic conditions. From this, I will explore where and how sugarcane could be grown at the lowest environmental cost, and how this might change under a changing climate.
