Department of Zoology

Tracey Brazier and Alecia Carter are joint winners of this year’s Award for Outstanding Contribution. They were presented with their awards at the Newcomers’ Party on Thursday 11th November. This annual award is to recognise and reward a member of staff who has gone that extra mile for the Department in the last year.

The Professors' Award is to recognise and reward members of staff who have gone that extra mile for the Department in the past year.

Professor Michael Akam told the Department that he received 25 nominations this year, commending 13 different members of staff for their contributions during the year.  As in previous years, the nominees spanned the whole Department – academic and assistant staff, from senior members to people who have recently joined us.

Quoting  from the nominations, first for Alecia :

“Alecia has been a great champion of Post Docs this year.  Through her active leadership the Post Doc Committee has been influential and effective …. Alecia led by example and made things happen.   She will be a hard act to follow.”

“She organised a very well attended series of [career development] workshops and always provided a very comprehensive summary of these meetings…without any direct benefit to herself.”

“Her engagement [….. has] helped to make the department both a happier and a more productive environment”

….AJ's influence does not stop in these walls….. She energetically works to improve the way research is …  done, to make science a more fair and ethical undertaking. ”

And for  Tracey Brazier

“Tracey has stood out with her positive ‘can do’ attitude.  She has on many occasions volunteered to help when she could have just sat back and stuck to ….. her official role.”

“Tracey  … takes pride in her work and is one of those colleagues who make coming into the Department a pleasure.”

“I am nominating her for this award as her contribution ….. is truly outstanding.”

Prof Michael Akam added that Tracy has repeatedly been nominated in almost every year of the Professor’s award, so it is particularly good to be able to make an award to her this year.
