Professor Derek Smith and Professor Bill Sutherland have been listed in the Thompson Reuters Highly Cited Researchers of 2016 list.  31 researchers from Cambridge are on this list.

Highly Cited Researchers from Thomson Reuters is an annual list recognizing leading researchers in the sciences and social sciences from around the world. The 2016 list focuses on contemporary research achievement: only Highly Cited Papers in science and social sciences journals indexed in the Web of Science Core Collection during the 11-year period 2004-2014 were surveyed.

The data used in the analysis and selection of the new Highly Cited Researchers came from Essential Science Indicators (ESI), 2004-2014, which then included 128,887 Highly Cited Papers. Each of these papers ranked in the top 1% by total citations according to their ESI field assignment and year of publication. For more information on the identification of Highly Cited Papers in Essential Science Indicators, see the ESI help file at Essential Science Indicators.
