Animals faced with dynamic and conflicting cues need to use previously stored information to make reliable predictions during action selection. The complex process of action-selection requires systems-level integration and evaluation of sensory stimuli, learned associations and memories, and innate information. One of the most challenging tasks in modern neuroscience is to obtain a global map of neural circuit dynamics involved in such multi-level processes that can also be deconstructed into finer detail to probe the contributions of distinct circuits across various learning tasks and contexts.

Using newly developed tools for the tractable insect brain, I am studying the neural circuit motifs that integrate and evaluate learned and innate information over time while animals form associations that direct distinct behavioural outputs. This study will provide us with a comprehensive and high-resolution understanding of circuit implementations required for memory-based action selection.
